Crêpes
In my miniature, yet majestic kitchen, it was cozy, cute, a bit small, and it was still a part of my home. The walls were the shade of tapioca flour, the silverware were as shiny and sparkly as disco balls from the 80s, the air smelled like cotton candy candles, and the pots and pans were as clean as they could be. This is where fantastic crêpes are made. My mom and dad, the people I care about the most, love crêpes! It probably got passed on to me, but what really matters is that I appreciate having crêpes in my life. The most delicious crêpe on earth is a Nutella French crêpe with strawberries, bananas, powdered sugar and whipped cream. The cake-like aroma fills me with joy. The strawberries and bananas remind me of smoothies, the taste makes the flavors burst in my mouth. The explosion went through my head and I said, “Mmmm!” The powdered sugar and whipped cream add a certain fluffiness that reminds me of marshmallows.
My mom introduced me to the wonderful world of crêpes. They are flat, French pancakes that are filled or topped with something delicious to make crêpes for a savory lunch or a sweet dessert. I devour them, so I prefer to fill them, just in case I get messy. Some people put spinach, gruyere, chicken breast, Bechamel sauce, and Herb de Provence in them. I like them sweet, but they are both heavenly.
Once I saw my mom pull out a mixer and I asked, “What are you doing with that?”
“Nothing… I am just going to make a little something,” she replied.
“Okay then. If you say so.” I backed off, just waiting to see what she would come up with. I ecstatically anticipated the moment when she would tell me what it was she was making. I looked in the batch of ingredients for hints of what she could possibly be baking. I stared in admiration as she whisked all the ingredients together.
“Why are you standing there like that? It is a little weird. At least get a chair,” my mother said.
I eagerly pulled up a chair and waited for her to finish baking. When the anticipation balled up inside of me, it hit me.
“Cake! It is cake! Why are you making cake? I’d rather have strawberries.”
“ I know you would rather have fruits. That is why I am not making cake,” she said totally nonchalantly.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
The frustration welled up inside of me and I let out a huge groan.
“Why can't you just tell me?!” I whined.
“I want to know if you can figure it out,” she said. The giggle she let out was not humane. I noticed that she took some transparent plastic wrap and covered the bowl that she was using. I looked through the plastic wrap and saw bubbles. The bubbles were created when my mom whisked the ingredients together. Once I focused on it, I said, “Pancake mix! It is pancake mix! I can't believe I didn't know that earlier! Wait… Hold on. Why are we having pancakes for snack?”
“We aren't having pancakes for snack. Plus, this is not even pancake mix,” she replied.
“It’s not?”
“Nope, but you were really close.”
“Are they waffles?”
“ No.”
“Wait… I know what it is,” I proclaimed even though I hadn't a clue of what it was, “But I won't tell you what it is!”
“Fine, but guess what?”
“What?”
“You've never seen this before!”
From that point, I knew that I would just have to wait and see to find out what my mom was baking.
…
After my mom and I waited a day, she swiftly went to the kitchen, took out the mixture, and got a pan out. She spread a small amount of the mixture on the pan and the edges were as crisp as leaves in the fall, yet the center was nice and soft. She took some strawberries and whipped cream out of the fridge and picked two bananas from a bunch. She avidly grabbed Nutella from an orange and brown cabinet and spread it on one of the ‘flat pancakes.’ She added strawberries and bananas on top, then folded the thing like a professional cook, and since she didn't have powdered sugar at the time, she applied whipped cream to top it all off. She walked over and told me to enjoy.
“Bon appétit! Your first ever crêpe!”
“Thank you!” I took one bite of the crêpe with my fork and I was in heaven. Strawberries and bananas are already great, but when you add Nutella, it is especially tasty. The whipped cream was a puffy as a cloud and was extremely pretty. I was blown to bits by how amazing it was. I probably zoned out because the next thing I heard was my mom’s voice.
“Are you okay? Did you like it?” she exclaimed in anticipation.
“No, I am not okay. I did not like it whatsoever. I LOVED it!❤️” I replied.
“Great!”
“Can I get another one?”
“You see all that extra crêpe mix over there? That is for seconds. You can have one for lunch, but you have to change what is inside.”
“So is that a yes?”
“Uh-huh!”
“What would you put inside?”
“Things you would put in a panini.”
“Cool.”
“Can I have a crêpe for lunch?”
“Yes, if you really want one.”
“I do really want one!” the pleading in my eyes. I watched as my mom pulled out chicken breast slices, a cheese that automatically melts in your mouth, and a bit of spinach. She prepared it like the first one. It was an amazing combination of different tastes that almost made my head explode. I don't normally like spinach, but it was transformed into something great. Crêpes, you gotta love them.
